Instructions for glassblowing course participants

Who are the courses suitable for?

The courses are suitable for first-timers and anyone interested in glassworking, and do not require any special preparation. The minimum age for the courses is 16 years.

Booking and payment methods

The courses do not have fixed times, but each course is arranged separately with the participants.

Option 1:
You can buy the course directly from the online store either for yourself or as a gift card for someone else. If you have any preferences regarding the date and time, leave a message in the shopping cart. Otherwise, the time can be arranged later by email or through the form. This applies to both the buyer and the recipient of the gift card.

Option 2:
If you want to ensure that your desired date and time are definitely available, contact us first by email or through the contact form. Once the course time has been agreed, you can either buy the product from the online store or pay on site or by invoice. We also recommend this option for group courses if the final number of participants is not yet known. We invoice according to the final number of participants.

Note: the course time must always be confirmed with us, so it is a good idea if you can suggest several options. We also recommend booking well in advance, as Saturdays are very popular, while there are better options with a quicker schedule on weekdays.

Clothing

The glass studio is warm, so suitable workwear is a short-sleeved cotton t-shirt, jeans or other casual trousers, and sneakers or trainers.

Arriving at the glass studio

The HSL ferry ride to Suomenlinna takes 15 minutes, and the walk from the ferry terminal to the glass studio takes another 15 minutes. It is worth checking the ferry schedules before leaving, especially during the winter season when ferries run less frequently. The schedules can be found in the HSL Route Planner:

The most direct walking route from the ferry terminal to the studio can be found in the attached Google Maps link:

At the glass studio

We will start by going over safety, equipment, and tools. Depending on the group's interest and the schedule, we can also talk about the properties and history of glass, the workspace, and our own work. You can ask questions throughout the entire course!

The duration of the course depends on the object and the number of participants. We will first make one sample object, after which everyone will make their own object in turn under our guidance – no prior experience is required, and we will be available to help throughout the entire working session.

If there are several participants, the glass studio has a small back room/kitchen where you can wait for your turn and eat your snacks. You can also order refreshments for the studio from the cafes or restaurants in Suomenlinna.

For large groups, we suggest dividing the group in two. One half starts with glassblowing while the other goes for a walk, visits one of Suomenlinna's museums, or participates in a guided tour. After this, the groups switch places.

Pickup of finished works

All glass objects are cooled slowly so that no internal stresses remain in the glass and the object remains intact.

Objects that do not require cold working can be picked up as early as the next day. If the object requires additional work, such as grinding, cutting, or polishing, the completion time is approximately 1–3 weeks, depending on the workload. We will notify you by text message or email when your work is ready.

Finished works can be picked up from Suomenlinna or from our partner in Helsinki city center. If necessary, we can ship the works for an additional fee.
