Basics of Glassblowing

Experience traditional glassmaking using ancient methods in the historic setting, inside bastion Hyve (Virtue) in Suomenlinna sea fortress.

During the course, you will learn the basic techniques of glassblowing, tools, and handling hot glass. You will practice handling the glassblowing pipe, rolling glass on the marver, shaping it with a wooden paddle, and forming it with shears and wet newspaper.

The end products are three items: a "string of pearls" and a paperweight, shaped from solid glass, and a small clear vase that you have free-blown.

The lesson is conducted either as private instruction or in a small group of two people. The course is suitable for beginners and anyone interested in glassmaking. The minimum age for the course is 16 years.

The course lasts approximately 2 hours and includes:

• Safety instructions
• Introduction to glassblowing, demonstration of work stages, and glassblowing exercises
• Finishing the items by grinding and polishing. The items can be picked up afterwards.
